Needle Exchange
Taking drugs (including steroids) by injecting them makes you more vulnerable to injections, bloodborne viruses and injuries, but you can make it safer and reduce the risks by using a needle exchange service, such as is on offer here at Newdays Pharmacy.
Here, you’re able to collect new clean injecting equipment, as well as seeking advice for staying safe or to find out more about treatment options for addition. It is also possible to return any used equipment so that it can be disposed of safely.
Who can use a needle exchange service?
Needle exchange services are available to anyone who injects drugs, with equipment such as needles, syringes, vitamin C and citric acid available. It is free and confidential to visit the Newdays Pharmacy needle exchange, although you will be asked some basic information about yourself (information that will not be shared with any third party).
It is also possible to have tests carried out for viruses such as hepatitis C and HIV, while free naloxone kits and training are also available (which can help you reverse the effects of an overdose to help save someone’s life).
You will also be able to talk to a pharmacist, if you want to, about how you can reduce the risk of harm while injecting, as well as potentially putting you in touch with organisations that can offer you further information, advice and support, such as FRANK.
If you are already on a treatment programme, you may also be able to access medication following a more in-depth conversation with our pharmacist, helping you to regain some stability and gradually reduce usage over time.
We offer a supervised consumption service where you can take your medication in the pharmacy itself, helping you to make sure that you’re taking the right dose and to stop you from taking medication if it is deemed unsafe. We can also liaise with your keyworker on your behalf if there are concerns regarding your welfare.
