| Quick Answer: UK travellers to Tanzania, including Kilimanjaro trekkers and Zanzibar beach visitors, need yellow fever vaccination and certificate, hepatitis A, typhoid, and malaria prevention tablets. Rabies is recommended for those trekking or spending time in rural areas. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry to Tanzania and can only be given at a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. Newdays Pharmacy is a registered centre. |
Tanzania is a major destination for UK safari goers, Kilimanjaro trekkers, and Zanzibar beach holiday makers. It sits within one of Africa’s most biodiverse ecosystems but also requires comprehensive travel health preparation. At Newdays Pharmacy, we are a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and can provide all required and recommended vaccinations for Tanzania from our Berkshire branches.
Yellow Fever: Mandatory for Entry to Tanzania
Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all travellers aged one year and above that are travelling from a country with risk of yellow fever. This is a mandatory entry requirement, not simply a medical recommendation. You must present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) at the border. The ICVP is valid from ten days after vaccination and is now issued as a lifelong document.
Yellow fever vaccination can only be administered at a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. Newdays Pharmacy is a registered centre with trained pharmacists who can administer the vaccine and issue the official ICVP. Book your appointment at least fourteen days before departure to ensure the certificate is valid on arrival.
Other Recommended Travel Vaccinations for Tanzania
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A vaccination is essential for Tanzania. Contaminated food and water are significant risks across mainland Tanzania and in Zanzibar, even in tourist lodges and hotels. The two dose course provides long term protection.
Typhoid
Typhoid vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Risk is higher for those staying in local accommodation or eating outside international hotels. Available as an injection or oral course.
Rabies
Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is strongly recommended for Kilimanjaro trekkers and safari travellers. Medical facilities with rabies immunoglobulin are not reliably available at remote safari lodges or on the mountain. The three dose pre-exposure course should be completed at least four weeks before departure.
Malaria: Essential Prevention for Tanzania
Malaria is present throughout Tanzania, including in Zanzibar, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. Antimalarial tablets are essential for all travellers to Tanzania including Zanzibar. Atovaquone proguanil (Malarone), doxycycline, or mefloquine (Lariam) are the main options, chosen based on your individual health profile and duration of travel. Your Newdays Pharmacy travel health pharmacist will recommend the most appropriate option for you.
