Recommended Travel Vaccinations for Sri Lanka
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for all travellers to Sri Lanka. Risk from contaminated food and water exists across the island, including in tourist areas. The single dose and further booster course provides long term, potentially lifelong protection.
Typhoid
Typhoid is recommended for most travellers, particularly those visiting rural areas, eating local food, or staying with local families. The risk is higher outside international hotels. Both injectable and oral typhoid vaccines are available.
Rabies
Sri Lanka has a significant stray dog population and documented rabies transmission. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is strongly recommended for travellers planning stays of a month or more, those undertaking safari or wildlife activities, cyclists, and children. Without pre-exposure vaccination, a bite requires urgent access to rabies immunoglobulin, which may not be readily available across all parts of Sri Lanka.
Japanese Encephalitis
Japanese encephalitis is transmitted in rural agricultural areas, particularly rice farming regions. The risk to beach tourists and short stay city visitors is low. Vaccination is recommended for travellers spending a month or more in rural Sri Lanka, those visiting during the South West monsoon season when transmission peaks, and those engaged in fieldwork or outdoor activities in agricultural settings. The Ixiaro vaccine is given as two doses twenty eight days apart.
