Quick Answer: There are no travel vaccinations legally required to enter Thailand (unless you are arriving from a yellow fever zone). However, the NHS and travel health experts strongly recommend several vaccines to protect your health, including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and, depending on your activities, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis, and Hepatitis B. Up to date advice from a travel health clinic is essential before you travel.

Do I Need Any Vaccinations to Enter Thailand?

Thailand does not currently mandate vaccination certificates as a condition of entry for travellers from the UK, with one exception: if you are travelling from a country where yellow fever is endemic, you may be required to show proof of yellow fever vaccination. If your journey involves transit through a yellow fever zone, check current entry requirements with the Thai embassy before travel.

Recommended Vaccinations for Thailand

The following vaccinations are recommended by the NHS, UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency), and NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre) for travel to Thailand from the UK:

Hepatitis A – Strongly Recommended

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection spread through contaminated food and water. It is common in Thailand, particularly in areas with lower sanitation standards. Vaccination provides strong protection and is recommended for virtually all travellers.

  • Two doses provide long-term protection (first dose at least two weeks before travel)
  • A combined Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccine is available at Newdays Pharmacy

Typhoid – Strongly Recommended

Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi and is spread through contaminated food and water. It is particularly relevant for travellers eating street food or visiting rural areas.

  • Injectable vaccine offers approximately three years of protection
  • Oral capsule vaccine also available (not suitable for children under five)

Hepatitis B – Recommended for Most Travellers

Hepatitis B is spread through blood and bodily fluids. Vaccination is recommended for travellers who may receive medical or dental treatment in Thailand, those with longer stays, and anyone engaging in activities that increase the risk of exposure.

Rabies – Recommended for Certain Travellers

Rabies is present in Thailand and transmitted through the bite, scratch, or lick of an infected animal, most commonly dogs and bats. Pre-exposure vaccination is recommended for:

  • Travellers planning outdoor activities, trekking, or cycling
  • Travellers visiting remote areas where immediate medical care is unavailable
  • Children (at higher risk due to play behaviour)
  • Long stay travellers (four weeks or more)

Pre-exposure vaccination (three doses) does not eliminate the need for treatment after exposure but buys critical time to access medical care.

Japanese Encephalitis – Recommended for Some Travellers

Japanese Encephalitis is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, primarily in rural areas near rice paddies and pig farming. It is more relevant for:

  • Travellers staying for more than four weeks in rural areas
  • Those visiting during or after the monsoon season (May to October)
  • Anyone with significant outdoor exposure in endemic rural areas

Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio – Check Your Boosters

Ensure your routine UK vaccinations are up to date before any international travel, including diphtheria, tetanus, and polio. If you have not had a booster in the last ten years, you may need one before travelling.

Malaria Risk in Thailand

Malaria transmission in Thailand is low in the most popular tourist areas, including Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Chiang Mai city. However, risk exists in forested border areas, particularly near the borders with Myanmar (Burma) and Cambodia.

Antimalarial tablets are not routinely recommended for most tourist itineraries in Thailand, but may be appropriate for travellers visiting border regions or engaging in jungle trekking. Our travel clinic pharmacists can provide destination-specific antimalarial advice based on your exact itinerary.

Other Travel Health Precautions for Thailand

  • Dengue fever: no vaccine currently available in UK pharmacies; use DEET-based mosquito repellent and cover skin at dawn and dusk
  • Food and water safety: drink bottled or boiled water; avoid raw shellfish and salads washed in tap water
  • Sun protection: UV levels are extreme; SPF 50+ sunscreen is essential
  • Travel insurance: ensure your policy covers medical evacuation

How Far in Advance Should I Book a Travel Clinic Appointment?

We recommend booking at least six to eight weeks before travel, as some vaccines require multiple doses spaced over several weeks (for example, Rabies, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis). However, if you are travelling at shorter notice, our travel clinic pharmacists can still provide vaccines and advice, prioritising those offering the fastest protection.
